How it works

  1. Step 1: Add your material

Upload lecture slides, a reading or a PDF, or paste your notes.

  2. Step 2: Choose the level

Easy cards for core definitions, standard for why and how questions, exam level for applying ideas to scenarios.

  3. Step 3: Review and edit

Every card links back to its source. Edit any card, or regenerate one that isn't helpful.

  4. Step 4: Study with spacing

Rate each card as you go, and the ones you miss come back sooner.

What actually works

Evidence-informed study advice you can use with or without TurboStudy.

Why flashcards work — when you use them right

Flashcards are a tool for retrieval practice: pulling an answer out of memory, which strengthens that memory far more than reading the answer again. Research on the “testing effect” has found this repeatedly across subjects and ages.

The catch is that flipping too fast turns recall into recognition. If you glance at the front, flip immediately and think “yep, knew that”, you've skipped the part that does the work. Commit to an answer — out loud or on paper — before you flip.

How to write a good flashcard

Whether you write cards yourself or edit generated ones, these rules make a deck far more effective:

  • One idea per card. A card that asks for five things gets marked “almost” forever. Split it.
  • Ask a question, not a topic. “Why does marginal cost eventually rise?” beats “Marginal cost”.
  • Mix in why and how cards. Definitions get you started; exams usually ask you to explain and apply.
  • Keep answers short. If the back is a paragraph, you'll skim it instead of checking yourself.
  • Add an example to the back when a concept is abstract — it gives your memory something concrete to hold.
  • Make the front make sense on its own, without needing the lecture in front of you.

Spacing: when to review

Reviewing a card right before you would have forgotten it is much more efficient than reviewing it again and again in one sitting. This is the spacing effect, one of the most reliable findings in learning research.

A simple manual schedule: review new cards the same day, then the next day, then after about three days, then a week. Cards you miss go back to the start. TurboStudy's spaced repetition does this scheduling for you.

Grade yourself honestly

“Almost” is not “know”. If you needed a hint, got half the answer, or took a long time, mark it as missed. Generous grading makes the deck feel finished while the knowledge isn't there yet.

Shuffle the order, too. If you always see cards in the same sequence, you can start recalling answers from position rather than from the question.

Frequently asked questions

How many flashcards can I generate for free?

The free generator on this page makes 5 cards per run without an account. A free account includes 100 AI flashcards a month, generated from whole lectures and PDFs.

Can I edit the flashcards?

Yes. You can edit the front and back of any card, delete cards, or ask TurboStudy to rewrite a card that isn't helpful.

Do the cards show where the answer came from?

Yes. In the app each card keeps a reference to the page, slide or section of your material it was written from.

Can I choose how hard the flashcards are?

Yes — easy (core definitions), standard (definitions plus why and how questions) or exam level (applying concepts to scenarios).

Are AI flashcards accurate?

They're written only from your material, which keeps them on-topic, but AI can make mistakes. Skim the deck once and fix anything that doesn't match your notes.
